From the Director, April 2024

From the director with the cover of Books & Beyond

Every April during National Library Week, we try to share with you the value that libraries bring to the community. From books to programs to meeting spaces to experiences, we provide an awful lot of stuff for a wide range of people.

But this National Library Week, I want to focus the conversation on you rather than on us. A library is only as strong as the support it receives from the people it serves. So, if you love the library, can you do us a favor? Please use our resources.

Borrow a book or a DVD, and if you’re too busy to come in person, we’ll deliver it to your home.

Pause your Audible subscription for a month and try using your library card and the Libby app for audiobooks instead. You’ll save a little money, and you might be surprised how easy it is to use.

Try the Mango or Rocket languages apps to brush up on your second (or third) language skills.

Sign up for a book club or attend an author event.

I know we say it all the time, but there is literally something for everyone at the library. And there are 15 locations, dozens of events, hundreds of online resources, thousands upon thousands of books and countless things to discover that you’ve probably not seen before. And we offer them all at no cost to you.

People tell me all the time that they love the library, but they often follow it up with a comment about how they haven’t used it in a long time. I get it: Life is busy, and finding time to visit can be hard, but if you love your library, please do use it. You don’t have to come in person – just find your library card, log into our website and check out an ebook or log into a learning resource.

This National Library Week – or any time this month, actually – show your library how much you love it by finding your library card and logging into the website with your card number and PIN. Browse the catalog and request a book. Do some investment research. Sign up for a program. It won’t cost you anything but your time, and we’ll appreciate the investment you made in us.

Happy National Library Week!
